Former bank clerk Chris Small opened his Crucible account in 1992 - his first season as a professional - but then had to wait seven years to get back to Sheffield.

He beat Anthony Hamilton 10-9 in the first round of the 1999 Embassy World Championship and then gave John Parrott a major scare in the second round before going down 13-12. "Chris just won't let go," said Parrott of his opponent.

Small reached the last 16 again in 2001 after outstaying Hong Kong's Marco Fu 10-8 in a gruelling battle but was beaten 13-8 by fellow Scot John Higgins for a place in the quarter-finals.

Winner of the Benson and Hedges Championship in 1992, Small has yet to reach the final of a world ranking tournament. He was beaten at the semi-final stage of the 1995 Regal Welsh and the 1998 Grand Prix.
